Why A Benefit Event?
First of all, because “A Taste of the Peninsula” provides a wonderful opportunity to bring the community together to enjoy and celebrate the fruits of our bounteous Olympic Peninsula.
Second, this is a benefit event to raise money for the YMCA Community Arts Program. The Y has made a special commitment to a strong arts program because we know that people, particularly young people, who participate in the arts learn to be more tolerant and open, express themselves creatively, and realize improved self-confidence. Art improves the overall academic performance of children and enriches the lives of everyone. This event helps ensure that these important programs are affordable for all, and that financial assistance is available so that no one is turned away because of an inability to pay. Revenue generated by this event will serve to ensure a strong and growing arts presence in our local community. Long-term goals include a community art center and a partnership in art education and instruction in public schools.
Finally, this event shares the common community goals of increasing awareness of our world-class harvest, showcasing our wineries and culinary talent, and enhancing our Peninsula lifestyle.
The Future of This Event
This event embodies a commitment toward improving the culinary, agricultural, arts and cultural experience in our region. The potential is strong for A Taste of the Peninsula to become an annual event encompassing community arts and involving more restaurants/chefs, farms and food producers. Additional elements might include farm/food educational programs and eco-dining/eco-tourism.
