Developmentally Disabled Fitness

RobertThe D.D. fitness class is designed to enhance and/or maintain the physical fitness level of its participants through cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training. This instructor led class has helped our participants lose weight and become healthier!


Class Structure

This class is designed to meet the fitness needs of adults age 18 and older who are physically and mentally capable of participating in the class as structured, including understanding and carrying out simple to moderate instructions. The class has a major emphasis on develping and/or maintaining physical fitness with a minor emphasis on socializing and recreation. This class is taught by a certified fitness instructor. Please note that while our staff are C.P.R. certified, we have no medical personnel on staff.

Meeting Times

Class Meets: Tuesdays & Thursdaysdd class
Time: 2-3 p.m.
Members: Free
Non-Members: $25

Staff will monitor participants' progress in the areas of 1. cardiovascular endurance, 2. muscular strength, 3. strength training, 4. flexibility training

 

Class Format

1. Warm up: Walking or rhythmic movement.

2. Cardiovascular Training: Cardiovascular machines, light aerobics.

3. Strength Training: Nautilus machines and or resistance tubing.

4. Flexibility Training: Simple stretching.

Caregiver Responsibilities

1. Meet with the instructor with the potential participant for an initial pre-class screening where paperwork is completed, class structure is explained and questions are answered.

2. For the safety and comfort of all concerned, we require the guardian/caregiver to accompany the class member for a period of 2 weeks before the participant is left alone in our care.

3. We require guardian/caregiver to read, sign and return monthly evaluations.

4. Caregiver is responsible for informing the instructor of ANY changes to address, condition, medications, etc.

Participant Entry/Registration

Persons interested in participating in D.D. class should make an appointment for initial screening with Mike Newcomb, D.D. class instructor. Please call the YMCA at 360.452.9244 to arrange a time.

Payment Policy

For participants who are not YMCA members, the $25 class fee is due no later than the first class day of each month. Please note, if class fees for the month are not paid on time and prior arrangements have not been made for late payment, the particpant may be asked to "sit out."
